Year 2 - Advanced Social Work Practice

To state that I was challenged by the research course would be an understatement. I believed the only valuable research was based on data points that could be studied and reproduced. Qualitative and mixed value research is a concept that I struggle with. I am thankful that it occurred after my assumptions were stretched.

Critical Learning

Year 1 - Trauma- Informed Practice

This graduate certificate challenged me as my lived experience and education collided.

The first thought that comes to mind is the course with Dr. Marlyn Bennett.

~It is not about preventing death (by suicide) but creating a life worth living ~

Two-Eyed Seeing -

My initial position was there was only the scientific method to validate and view the world. When one eye is closed, we lose depth and our vision narrows.

One eye is not better than the other, but honouring both leads to a richer experience

Year 3 - Putting it all together

This year was where I had to put my actions into practice into a way that I did not plan. The process of putting theories into action challenged my assumptions and helped me to grow. As I had more experiences, my skills and comfort level grew in using traditional talk therapies and connecting the body. The body’s response to trauma is more then a mental response and healing occurs in multiple levels.
